The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
