Lando Norris edged out team-mate and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, sitting 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at corner four early in the session. Tsunoda spun out over the exit kerbs before rotating through the run-off area, and was blessed to get away with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in P19, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, 0.619secs behind the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
